The Pause First™ Guide

Before your next vet visit, take a moment.

You know your animal better than anyone. You notice the small shifts — the change in appetite, the limp that comes and goes, the way they've been a little quieter lately.

But in the consultation room, with your animal stressed on the table, those details don't always come out the way you planned.

Pause First™ helps you organise your thoughts at home — so your main concern and useful background are easier to communicate.

The Pause First™ method

The guide follows the same structure a veterinarian uses to take a clinical history. It walks you through the key areas — so you arrive with a clear, useful summary instead of scattered thoughts.

Your animal’s basic details — species, breed, age, and weight

Vaccination status and whether they’re up to date

Current medications, supplements, and preventatives

Medical history — previous surgeries, conditions, or diagnoses

What changed and when it started

Patterns and triggers you’ve noticed

Appetite, energy, drinking, and bathroom habits

Your top questions for the vet

Printable Prep Sheets

A structured worksheet you can print and fill in before every visit. Covers your animal's background, current concern, timeline, and questions for the vet. Reusable, simple, and designed by a vet.

Your vet can examine, test, and diagnose — but they can't see what happens at home. That part is yours.

The timeline of when things changed. The pattern you noticed over the weekend. The question you thought of at 2 a.m. and forgot by morning.

These details help your vet understand the fuller picture. When they're clear, the conversation is more focused. When they're missing, important context can be lost.

Pause First™ is a simple framework that helps you gather those details before you leave the house — built on the same structure veterinarians use to take a history.

For anyone who has ever…

·

Left the vet thinking "I forgot to mention something"

·

Struggled to explain what changed and when

·

Practised what you wanted to say in the car — and still blanked

·

Wanted to ask clearer questions but couldn’t find the words

·

Wished you felt more grounded before walking in

You're not unprepared because you don't care. You're unprepared because nobody ever showed you how.

Why I made this

My name is Ólbrith Hansen. I'm a veterinarian, and I run Cykeldyrlægen, a mobile vaccination practice for dogs and cats in Copenhagen — I see animals in their own homes. Pause First™ came from something I noticed more than once at those visits, and from what structured history-taking is trained to catch in the first place.

Structured history-taking is something every vet is trained in — it's a core part of how we're taught to think through a case. But I noticed the same gap on the owner's side: people who clearly knew something was off, but couldn't quite get it into words under pressure.

It wasn't a lack of attention. It was the opposite. They cared deeply, noticed everything, and then froze when it mattered most.

The research backs up why that gap matters — a clear history changes what a vet can actually work with. Pause First™ is that same structured thinking, built for the owner's side of the visit.

Your next vet visit can go differently.

Walk in knowing your main concerns won't be forgotten.
